In functional training, a distinction is made between different functional areas. In pushing exercises, your chest muscles and arm extensors are the most important. Here you move a weight or your body’s center of gravity away from your hands.
Pulling movements primarily involve your back muscles, such as the latissimus dorsi and the arm flexors (biceps). You move a weight or your body’s center of gravity toward your hands.
Another functional area is locomotion, for which your legs are responsible. For this reason, we call the third functional area simply Legs.
Your trunk is always involved in any functional movement. It is where many large and small muscles originate or attach. Your core controls the quality and stability of every major movement. Even though almost every exercise involves muscles of the core, there are many specific exercises to strengthen your core, especially your abdominals and lower back.
In addition, there are the full body exercises. This is a pool of exercises that are often particularly complex in their movement execution, have a high coordination requirement and always involve a variety of different body and muscle regions.
